SYNOPSIS
The southern Indian state of Kerala has two forms of traditional music – "Sopanam" and "Panchavadyam" music. Rooted in South India’s Carnatic musical tradition, incorporating Kerala’s folk music and developed in temples, sopanam music is simple, rustic and joyous, evoking a devotee’s ascension to heights of devotion.
Also steeped in South Indian and Keralan folk traditions and an integral part of Keralan temple festivities, panchavadyam music ("pancha" means "five","vadyam" means "music of instruments") is the vibrant music of five instruments – the edakka, shudha madhalam and timila drums, kombu trumpet and elathalam cymbals.
This November, experience the joyful rhythms of Kerala’s panchavadyam music when Kalaa Utsavaam 2010 opens with Talking Drums of Kerala – featuring instruments such as the chenda, edakka, sudha madhalam, timila, mridangam, ghatam and ganjira, and a performance of Kalarippayattu, a unique martial arts dance form.
