SYNOPSIS
Mabel is a 15-year-old student, who stumbles upon an anonymously-written blog one day which identifies her as 'one of the top three ugliest girls in school'. Mabel is shocked to find that someone has been taking unflattering shots of her in school and posting them on the blog. Mabel’s mother, Mrs Tan, is IT-illiterate and cannot understand why Mabel is so affected by the happenings in a virtual world. Mabel's teacher, Mr. Ling, tells her that it is difficult to take action and to stop visiting the blog, since; after all, 'people have a very short attention span on the Internet'.
However, Mabel becomes increasingly obsessed with the blog. Under the suggestion of Sean, her best friend, Mabel begins to log in and vote for the other 'ugly' candidates. After a week of daily voting, Mabel is no longer the winner of 'ugly', then she receives rumours that the new 'ugly' winner had attempted suicide. In her efforts to overcome cyber-bullying, Mabel has inadvertently victimized someone else instead. What can she do? What should she have done? Who is the victim? Who is the bully? How can Mabel deal with a bully who is invisible?
Through Forum Theatre and the creative use of multimedia, "So Ugly Can Die!" confronts the urgent issues surrounding cyberbullying. It offers the students an opportunity to reflect on how new media technologies (such as the Internet, camera phones and videos) may be abused to embarrass, demean, harass, and hurt others. "So Ugly Can Die!" will inspire students to use interactive technologies in socially responsible ways.
