Come enjoy enchanting tales told through puppetry such as Chen Xiang Rescues His Mother, Wu Song Fights the Tiger, and Da Ming Mansion. Performed by the award-winning Jinjiang Puppet Opera Troupe.
Chen Xiang Rescues His Mother
Adapted from the folktale The Lotus Lamp, this story revolves around Chen Xiang’s mother, an immortal, who comes to the mortal world in search of happiness. But she is captured by the deity Erlang and incarcerated at the bottom of HuaMountain. To rescue his mother, Chen Xiang learnt martial arts from master TaiXu, and eventually defeated Erlang with help from the white crane. This story of filial piety and courage also showcases puppetry techniques like Changing Faces and Fire Spitting.
Wu Song Fights the Tiger
This story is an excerpt from the classic novel, The Water Margin. On his way to visit his brother, Wu Song becomes drunk after a few drinks at a lodge near Mount Jingyang. Despite being warned about the presence of a ferocious tiger, Wu Song heads straight for the mountain where he comes face-to-face with the beast.,After a grueling battle, he kills the tiger, and the people are overjoyed. This production’s superb storytelling technique brings out the characters’ emotions through subtle gestures and movements.
Da Ming Mansion
A righteous man, Lu Junyi, is held in captivity and the heroes of Mount Liang are determined to rescue him. To distract the guards, they disguise themselves as buskers and perform a variety of tricks and feats, which eventually leads to a successful rescue. This production entertains with its many skilful puppetry moves and acrobatic displays.
