SYNOPSIS
What is world music? What kinds of music are considered to be world music?

Participants will gain more insights about the various music genres, its origins and the types of music used around the world for various occasions. You will also be taught how to recognise rhythms and how different sounds are created. There will be hands-on opportunities to create your own music using instruments such as the African “talking drums”, the Hawaiian ipu, South American tribal rattles and more. This workshop is not to be missed!
About the facilitator:
Joyce Teo holds an MA in Ethnomusicology and is currently the Assistant Director in charge of Academic matters at the School of Technology for the Arts, Republic Polytechnic. Joyce is the first qualified gamelan music teacher in Singapore and has been, for the past 20 years, composing and performing at major festivals around the world including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, the Joenju Sori Festival in Korea, the Brave Festival in Poland and the Yogjakarta International Gamelan Festival in Indonesia.  In the early 1990s, she developed a series of radio programmes promoting world music for the (now defunct) Passion 99.8FM station and continues to provide consultancies and training in world music. Joyce is also an arts critic and educator, having conceptualised and coordinated numerous performing arts activities for schools. She is currently on the People’s Association Talent Advisory Panel and is an external assessor for the National Arts Council.
